Understanding Partnership Capabilities (Earn, Burn, Convert)
When forming a partnership on the qiibee Points Exchange Infrastructure (PEI), Buyers select how they want to use a Seller’s loyalty currency.
These options—Earn, Burn, and Convert—are collectively known as Partnership Capabilities and define what the Buyer can do once the partnership is approved.
This article explains each capability, how they work, and how Sellers can configure them during onboarding.
1. What Are Partnership Capabilities?
Partnership capabilities describe how a Buyer’s customers can interact with a Seller’s loyalty currency. There are three core capabilities:
|
Capability |
Meaning |
|---|---|
|
Earn |
Buyer rewards their customers with the Seller’s points |
|
Burn |
Buyer’s customers redeem the Seller’s points for rewards |
|
Convert |
Buyer converts their own points into the Seller’s points |
These capabilities are defined by the Seller during onboarding. Buyers can then request one or more of them during the partnership request flow.
2. Earn – Reward Customers with Points
What it means
A Buyer can issue the Seller’s points to their own customers.
Examples:
-
A retailer gives 1,000 airline miles for a purchase
-
A fintech app rewards users with hotel points for spending
-
A travel agency issues miles after a booking
Common use cases
-
Rewarding transactions
-
Loyalty campaigns
-
Welcome bonuses
-
Referral programs
-
Spending-based rewards
This capability is most commonly used across PEI.
3. Burn – Redeem Points for Rewards
What it means
A Buyer allows customers to redeem the Seller’s loyalty currency (e.g., miles/points) in exchange for a reward, offer, or product.
Examples:
-
Redeeming airline miles for a hotel stay
-
Redeeming hotel points for retail vouchers
-
Exchanging miles for discounts in an online shop
Common use cases
-
Voucher-based redemptions
-
In-store or online product exchanges
-
Travel reward redemptions
-
Event or experience bookings
Burn capability may require additional integration work depending on the program.
4. Convert – Exchange One Loyalty Currency Into Another
What it means
A Buyer can allow their customers to convert their own points into the Seller’s program.
Conversion example:
-
2 Buyer Points → 1 Seller Point
Common use cases
-
Coalition loyalty programs
-
Super-app reward systems
-
Cross-brand partnerships
-
Multi-currency reward wallets
